Our customers primarily deploy Scalent for Business Continuity (for Server Failover / High Availability / Disaster Recovery) and Test / Ops Automation (for Test Labs and Managed Service Providers) in production, pre-production, and QA / test scenarios.

Business Continuity (Server Failover / High Availability / Disaster Recovery)
The image to the right (click to expand) shows the Scalent V/OE GUI topological view of a small portion of a data center with inherent continuity capabilities. As may be seen, there are both physical servers (a rack of blades) and virtual servers (a VMware ESX Server with space for four virtual machines).
The same system can be viewed in the GUI from a logical perspective - there's a large web store multi-tier application running. Note the direct correspondence between logical and real machines.
But what if the VMware Virtual Machine running one of the Apache web servers fails -- or even the entire VMware ESX Server itself?
Scalent recognizes the failure (as can be seen by the changed color of the Virtual Machine, circled in this view)...
...and automatically brings the server back up on a physical blade, per predefined rules about that server's processing needs. In fact, Scalent is highly complementary to VMware Site Recovery Manager -- as VMware describes on their data sheet, here
As can be seen in the logical view, no configurations have changed - the webserver maintains the same LAN and SAN connectivity.

Test / Ops Automation (Test Lab & Managed Services Providers)

The same system can be viewed in the GUI from a logical perspective - there's a web store multi-tier application on the top of the diagram, and a finance application being tested in the lower half of the diagram. Note the correspondence between logically represented and real machines.
But what if you wanted to change from testing the finance application to running a production Citrix server farm on those machines? With one click of a button, the physical machines can be repurposed in minutes - as can be seen in the associated logical and real views.

Virtualization 2.0(Extending & Simplifying VMware and Xen deployments)
The image to the right (click to expand) shows the Scalent V/OE GUI topogical view of a small portion of a server farm containing physical machines with "bare metal" operating systems and hypervisors (such as VMware ESX and Xen). As may be seen, the physical machines are of various types (blades, rack-mount, tower) and are spread across several locations in the data center, networked through several levels of heirarchical switches.
The same system can be viewed in the GUI from a logical perspective - there's a web store multi-tier application on the top of the diagram, and a finance application being tested in the lower half of the diagram. Note the correspondence between logically represented and real machines: the topology is maintained across physical and virtual machines, through several heirarchical network switch levels.
But what if you wanted to move a virtual machine from an ESX Server on one physical LAN segment to another, or to a currently non-existing ESX server (such as might be required by VMware DRS, HA, or SRM)? What if you wanted to deploy a new ESX server, or move the virtual to a physical machine (P2V / V2P), or otherwise change what various physical and virtual machines were doing? With one click of a button, the physical machines can be repurposed in minutes - as can be seen in the associated logical and real views.
Note that Scalent removes existing hypervisor constraints: it's possible to automatically deploy VMware ESX servers on physical machines attached to different physical LAN switches, and associated with different storage zones (vs a flat network and all zones), in real-time. The underlying physical machine operating system, network connectivity, and storage access have been "virtualized" by Scalent, so that the appropriate physical pre-conditions have been created for all of VMware's functionality to work as advertised.

IT Consolidation (Repurposing "standby" machines; serial or day / night usage; "green" use)
